I have been helping the office staff with technical issues they have. So, once a week I work in the office. It is interesting to go down there. It feels like another world. And the questions I get feel otherworldly as well.
They ask a lot of questions about Google Sheets. And this is great for me.
Last week I was asked how to format phone numbers.
What I learned so far
I started by looking for a list of random phone numbers. What I found was better - the Random Number Formula.
The formula I used was [below] to get 9 random numbers. I then dragged that down to make a list.
=RANDBETWEEN(0,9)&RANDBETWEEN(0,9)&RANDBETWEEN(0,9)&RANDBETWEEN(0,9)&RANDBETWEEN(0,9)&RANDBETWEEN(0,9)&RANDBETWEEN(0,9)&RANDBETWEEN(0,9)&RANDBETWEEN(0,9)&RANDBETWEEN(0,9)
I then had to add the hyphens.
This can be done in the Format tab. Go to Format > Number > More Formats. Then, you can select your new format as one to use in the future.
Another part of this was to find out how to format home line numbers. While I couldn't find a formula yet, I did find out that using an apostrophe before a 0 will keep the zero in the number instead of removing it.
Also, there might be a way to create a link for a phone number that calls from your phone. I found a few blog posts about it, but couldn't get it to work.
